Marcus' Great Molokai Adventure : During spring break 2008 "the boys" were fortunate to be invited to Uncle John's ranch on Molokai. Sharing a passion for flying with our host, Marcus and Wes, literally, flew into four days of adventure. Flying a Seneca Piper twin turbo most of the way from Honolulu to Molokai, Marcus was stoked and received high praise from our pilot, "the best first time pilot I've ever had... (at ANY age!)" In addition to sleeping out under the stars (as big as light bulbs under Molokai's unobstructed skies), we spent father & son time rustling cattle on horseback at Molokai Ranch, exploring the sights throughout the island (Molokai Museum, sugar mill, beachcombing 3 mile Popohaku Beach, the wharf, sleepy Kaunakakai town, and hiking to the Kalaupapa overlook, etc., etc. Best of all, John treated us to rides in the Robinson, his sleek private helicopter, and to acrobatics in a Russian Yak tandem combat trainer. North shore Molokai will never look the same if not inverted and hanging against five point restraints! Thanks Uncle John for your hospitality and friendship - you made this a most memorable getaway for the Young family.

WCCHC 2007 Retreat - BEST : The Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center, or WCCHC, is an exemplary community health center servicing the Waianae and leeward coast of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Over 400 employees, many of whom live in the community and receive their own healthcare at WCCHC, provide accessible quality care to a wide range of community members, including those without insurance. "Waianae Comp" is the largest provider of healthcare in the world to native Hawaiians and the largest source of employment on the leeward coast. Employees convened on a "day of rest" and contemplation in a massive employee retreat under the visionary leadership of Dr. Richard Custodio, Mr. Richard Bettini, the WCCHC Board of Directors, and the many leaders too numerous to list. In many ways, working at "the Comp" is a Mission. These photos may be downloaded by employees for non-commercial, private use. LCC Guitars - 11/18/07 Concert : We were privileged to attend a performance of the LCC Guitars on November 18, 2007, under the directon of Peter Kun Frary. LCC is the Leeward Community College and the evening was well received by a small, but enthusiastic audience. LCC is a campus of the University of Hawaii and is located on the lovely leeward coast of the island of Oahu. The partipating muscians come from both LCC and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in Honolulu. Peter is an accomplished solo guitaraist and, as evidenced by the night's performances, a talented instructor and arranger as well. Along with several fine solo performances, the group performed as a group, presenting a number of classic and popular pieces in unique arrangements for guitar. Mr. Frary took time to share with the audience the methods he used to orchestrate such a large number of guitars, with both high and low sections as well as lead and harmony. His arrangements were much like those of a traditional orchestra, bringing out the richness and virtuosity of classical guitar. LCC Guitars is a "must see" and we hope they will perform again soon and receive the larger audience they deserve. Review and photos by Dr. Wes Young. Posted with permission of Peter Frary and at the request of a performer and his family. Please call 808 225-6869 to remove any image or for information on high resolution files. Prints are available from the website and will help support this site.

Standing on his roof (he's a trusting soul!) Wes captured a few twilight images of these "original Speed Racers." Thanks, Uncle Bob!

Easy Music Guitar Clinic - Nick Gertsson : Hawaii is fortunate to be the new home of a world-class guitar virtuoso hailing from Sweden. A rock guitarist, Nick Gertsson has pushed the bounds of the electric guitar universe with his ethereal and mesmerizing "new age" compositions. Easy Music Center on King Street recently hosted a free guitar clinic by Nick. The audience was treated to a symphony of voices and sounds emulating from an Epiphone electric guitar routed through a maze of effects pedals with original background tracks piped in via Nick's ipod. Gertsson makes the guitar sing - a veritable Swedish Hendrix. Nick teaches his art with Easy Music and we're grateful for Easy Music Center's ongoing series of progressively popular music clinics under the guidance of General Manager Chris Luke. Go to www.EasyMusicCenter.com for upcoming free events and get on their mailing list. Photos (c)2008 Wes Young/www.youngPHOTO.org

Easy Music Drum Clinic - von Baron : Once again, Easy Music Center in Honolulu has provided an invigorating free music clinic to Hawaii audiences. This well-attended session was presented by drum virtuoso "von Barron". von Barron provided an animated, toe-tapping and wide-ranging clinic on drum technique using both acoustic and digital drum sets. He masterfully fielded technical and style-related questions from the audience made mostly of drummers and his demos were especially enlightening with the overhead, high definition views projected from a wall-mounted flat screen TV monitor. von Barron implored musicians to "feel the music inside" and alternately danced, sang, blew a whistle, and shouted during his drum performances - and further illustrated his technique with audience participation. His special attention to Latin rhythms and excellent demo with brushes on snare made this evening's session appealing to both the professionals and novices in the audience. See more of this gifted and colorful musician at www.vonBarron.com and go to www.EasyMusicCenter.com for details on other upcoming, and outstanding, free music clinics. Pat and Carl hosted Marcus and Wes during a great trip to the Bay area and she and Marcus renewed their friendship. Marcus shared his piano playing, rock collection, and incredible view of south Oahu. A fellow Kamehameha student, Pat and Marcus broke the evening still with a rousing class song and Marcus lead Pat on a brief trek around the property, pausing at the many fruit trees and brilliant bougainvilla bushes surrounding the house. Ted's Yacht - Mast Installation AWM : Captain Ted, after weeks of intense craftsmanship, masterfully re-birthed his aft mast and today, with the help of able-bodied friends and the professionals of the Ala Wai Marine (AWM), installed the new and improved mast. While more work remains, the Lily Marlene is back to her classic outline and Uncle Ted's feeling a whole lot better... Thanks to everyone who lent a hand, especially our courageous German friend from AWM who went aloft to dizzying and dangerous heights in the bosun's chair. Afterwards, he said with a smile, "Thanks (for the photos) - my family thinks I just sand boats!" My admiration also to the crane operator. One twitch of his fingers could have easily killed a number of us. Please feel free to download and enjoy with friends and family worldwide. WCCHC 2008 Employee Awards : WCCHC, fondly known as "Waianae Comp" is one of America's largest Community Health Centers (CHCs) and is a lifeline to the people of Hawaii. Waianae Comp began in a single building with a few employees (see www.WCCHC.COM for more history). The center now provides healthcare for more native Hawaiians than any other health center on earth and serves families in need regardless of their ability to pay. Today, WCCHC is the leeward coast of Oahu's largest employer with about 500 employees. Mr. Richard Bettini, C.E.O., and Dr. Rick Custodio, Medical Director, recently hosted our annual employee awards ceremony for 2008 honoring employees with up to 35 continuous years of service. Posted here are some impromptu photos taken and posted by request as a further mahalo to our fellow employees. Please enjoy and share with friends and family. During their tour members were able to visit the new building on campus, the beautiful grounds, and take in both old and new Waianae Comp facilities. Their visit was punctuated by examples of Hawaii's unique flora and fauna, ranging from soaring birds and goats on the cliffs behind the Center, to fragrant plumeria, hibiscus and bougainvilla blossoms. Dr. Young was privileged to come along for a peek into the new facility and took photos of the experience which may assist the Marsh team in providing WCCHC their best services. Waianae Comp (WCCHC) Retreat 2008 - 1 of 5 : WCCHC (Waianae Comp) held it's 2008 annual employee retreat recently. The organizing team, lead by Mr. Bettini and Dr. Custodio, set a new standard of excellence. We re-affirmed our shared vision, highlighted the center's accomplishments despite perilous financial times, and set as a goal extraordinary CUSTOMER SERVICE. Of over 5,000 photos taken, here are some to share with the employees, families and friends. For ease, the photos are divided into 5 folders with "5of5" for misc. video clips - your computer may need a video driver from I.S. to view. The Slideshow Tool(see the upper right corner of this page) is the easiest way to view the pictures in each folder but, again, you may need a software driver to use this tool. Please enjoy and share with our friends far and wide. WCCHC and all employees are welcome to download and share. WCCHC - New Building Blessing 12/08 : Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center (WCCHC aka "Waianae Comp") on the beautiful leeward coast of Oahu, Hawaii, blessed its new, state-of-the-art Harry & Jennette Weinbert Family Medical Builiding on December 4, 2008. Senator Daniel Akaka, Representative Neil Abercrombie, representatives of Hawaii's governor and mayor, the WCCHC Board of Directors, were joined by multiple benefactors, employees, community members, builders, the Royal Hawaiian Band, and many others in dedicating this truly beauty architectural masterpiece. Attendees were treated to traditional Hawaiian blessings, a fabulous hula troup, and traditional chant. The Kahu carefully orchestrated entrance to the facility with dear Auntie Agnes Cope ("Auntie Aggie") the first to enter the new building, followed by a procession of the Board and many dignitaries. As visitors toured the facility, the Royal Hawaiian Band and lovely singers and hula dancers flavored the festive night along with food and drink. This was a night to remember and it was a privilege to capture such memories for future generations. WCCHC continues to change the face of Hawaii, with the new Hawaiian Healing building being constructed on the other side of the campus and more to come. As a thanks to all those who made this possible, these photos are provided for posterity and are downloadable for personal or internal use. Prints may also be ordered here and will help cover the costs of this website. See the next folder for a few video clips as well.

Malia In Hawaii - Belly Dancers at Kahala Mall, Hawaii : "Always carry your camera" is one lesson I emphasize when teaching friends and fellow doctors photography. I like my little Sony "point and shoot" with it's 13.6 megapixel resolution and high speed/special effects options. It's always in my "hip holster" (smaller than my cell phone carrier) when I need it. The lighting over this Kahala Mall stage wasn't ideal, and I had no warning about this wonderful exhibition of belly dancing, but the exuberance of these belly dancers still shines through. I've posted these at Malia's request. For more information, please see her website at www.MaliaInHawaii.com or call her at 808 234-1006 Hawaii Standard Time. She has a beautiful brochure listing a wide variety of learning and performance opportunities around Oahu. Quality photo prints can be ordered here online.
